README

Overview:
This document contains information on the four Unreal files created for the PlayStation 1 by Matthew Kagle.  These two missions (broken into two pieces each) were set to be played at the end of the second of three acts in the game.  Since these levels were so late in the game, they were designed to be difficult for the player to complete.

Limitations:
Since these levels were designed for the PlayStation 1, the levels had to be scaled down to fit into the existing hardware.  The limitations placed on the levels were quite draconian and included:
A maximum of 3000 polygons per level
Low number of visible polygons per room (STAT FPS).
A maximum of 3 monsters per room and fewer in rooms with high polygons.

With such restrictions in place, I agreed to create levels with a less combative and more puzzle-oriented approach.  In order to avoid large-scale combats, emphasis was placed on jumping puzzles.  Levels were organized so the player would have to return to the same locations repeatedly to save space and give the impression of longer gameplay.

Note: The in-game cutscenes used in these levels are placeholders and were intended to give the programmers (who would be creating finished cutscenes) an idea of what needed to be seen at what points in the levels.  These cutscenes should not be mistaken for completed work.

Installation:
1. Unzip all level files (E2L6A, E2L6B, E2L7A, and E2L7B) into Unreal's Maps directory.
2. Unzip NPScript into Unreal's System directory.
3. E2M7A and E2M7B require Crypt2 and Crypt_FX, they should be put in the textures folder.


Walkthroughs:
I have provided a walkthrough of all of the levels.
E2L6A
1. Shoot the terminal to open the door.  Don't forget to get the translator, armor, and health pack.
2. Go through the blue force field.  It will damage you back down to 100 health The field was a trick I came up with to ensure I had control over the player's health level.
3. Kill the two snipers in the hologram room; there are rifles in the corner to aid you.  Note that the elevator has been locked.
4. Go across the scaffolding to the space ship that has been unearthed.  Jump into the engine.  Shoot the grey wall to enter the generator room.  Jump into the generator room.
5. Activate the engine by pressing the four control panels at the bottom of the center column.  You can only activate the ones that aren't flashing, so order is important.
6. Once the engine has been activated, climb on top of the black and grey paddle next to the chunk of debris.  You now have to jump from one paddle to the next then to the light on the wall and then to the vent.  Jump out into the engine shaft.  This is extremely hard to do so I put invisible stoppers in to make it easier (more would have been added but the project was cancelled).
7. Ride the engine thermals out of the ship.
8. Go to the laser room and press the red button to activate the laser.  Press the button three times until it blows away the doors blocking you from the elevator shaft.
9. Jump down the elevator shaft to go to the next level.
Bonus: If you walk to one side of the space ship, you will see a small alcove you can jump to.  In it are healing fruit vines and a dispersion pistol powerup.

E2L6B
1. Kill the guard.  The guard's job is (was) to stand on the panels in the floor that open the doors.  You will have to stand on a panel and then run to the door to enter the area you need to go to.  Go through the door opposite the elevator.
2. Kill the guard and go across the scaffolding to the opening in the ship.  Touch the lever to pull it down and return to the door room.
3. Go through the door to the left of the elevator (not the one with the red cross over it).  Jump into the liquid (it's coolant in case you were wondering) and get the SCUBA unit from the raised circle in the floor.  Go into the tube.
4. At the end of the long tube is a raised button.  Touching it will press it into the ship and allow you to activate the reactors.  Leave the tube and return to the ledge by the elevator on the left.  There is a rocket can under the elevator, if you want it (you do).
5. Climb across the colored tubes to the three reactors.  Each reactor has a button you can to press to activate the reactor.  When all the reactors are activated, you can leave and go back to the scaffolding.
6. Jump down off of the scaffolding to the umbilicus tube.  Jump off the tube on to the stack of boxes.  Fight off the three guards and collect the powerups under the elevator shaft.
7. Stand on the circle on the ground underneath the black symbol on the side of the ship and then stand back.  Stand on the circle and jump from it to the stairs.  Jump from the stairs into the ship to go to the next level.

E2L7A
The object of this level is to enter the circular portal.  To get there you have to follow the path delineated by the green pyramids (it will draw you in the right direction).  Complicating this is a series of objects that are blocking the path.  To remove them, you have to go to a series of sub-rooms.

The sub rooms are accessed by jumping on the four circular platforms next to the water cubes and lava spheres.  Once you are in a sub-room, entering the white light will bring you back.

Earth - The purple platform takes you to the earth room.  You have to jump to each of the ledges in this room to move a series of blocks from the main room.  The dragonfly in this room is flying to each of the ledges in the order you have to go to them.

Slime - The green platform takes you to the slime room.  Jump into the green fountain to go to the top of the room.  Run across the side of the platform and jump to the other side of the room to touch the small clamshell to remove a final block.  Jump back down to the pool and ride the green fountain up again.  This time you have to jump earlier to get to the white exit light.  It is also possible to jump along the side fountains to get to the exit (and you'll get a fire suit that will help you later).

Water - The blue platform takes you to the water room.  Jump down into the lower pool and press the raised circle in the floor.  A piece will move out of the wall that you can shoot and enter the passage behind it.  Go up the passage to the top pool and enter the tube at the center and press the cube at the top to remove the block.  Enter the vortex in the center to leave.

Fire - The red platform takes you to the fire room.  The fire room has two short pillars in the lava flow to jump to.  When you jump to them, they will extend to the ceiling and remove the block in the main room.  Extend both pillars to complete the room.

Once you are back in the main room, jump to the nearby green pyramid and ride the flow to the end.  Jump across the series of platforms to the circular portal to exit the level.

E2L7B
1. Turn around and go into the heart room.  Go to the bottom of the room, under the flows of blood, and shoot the floor.  Enter the doors and go into the corridor.
2. Stepping into the lit areas on the floor will cause the nearby lamp to move aside and release a small monster.  You can fight them or avoid the lit areas on the floor.  Go to the door at the end and stand on the ledge.
3. Jump to the green lines and ride them around the pit to one of the two other exits.  One will take you to the reactor room and the other will take you to the bonus room.
4. The next area is blocked off by a door that will only open if you activate the reactor.  Jump to the bottom of the silo by jumping to the different ledges on the sides.  Standing on the button on the bottom will cause the ledges to move.  Exit the silo again by jumping from ledge to ledge until you get to the top again.
5. The next area is the gauntlet, which is a long corridor filled with all sorts of badness.  When you step on the platform, a door at either end of the hall will open for a short time.  Inside the hallway are three monsters, a series of impaling spikes and three pools you have to jump over.  It is easiest if you kill the monsters first and then later go back and run across from one side to the other.
6. Optionally, you can avoid the gauntlet altogether.  By shooting the dark lamp on the ceiling of the entry room, you can raise a series of platforms.  Either jump to the end of the platforms or stand on the last platform before you shoot the lamp.  On a wall above the gauntlet door is another door.  If you shoot it, it will open and allow you to teleport to the other side of the gauntlet.
7. You now return to the heart chamber.  You can jump to the top of the platform and get the SCUBA unit and return.  Enter the vertical wall of water to enter the heart itself.
8. The heart is made up of three chambers you have to travel through to move on.  Separating the chambers are valves that will crush you if you are caught by them.  Complicating things is the fact that the fluid is pushing you through the valves in its rush to exit.  You will eventually be pulled into white light to take you to the final room.
9. A series of platforms will light up showing you the path to the eye (the end of the level).  Jump from platform to platform to get to the eye, but don't wait too long since each platform will dump you off if you delay.
Bonus: Jumping from the pit can take you into the solar system room.  To get the powerup you have to jump from planet to planet and then, finally, to the sun in the center.
